Brock Turner loses his assault conviction appeal

Appeal Court has rejected Brock Turner’s attempt to overturn his rape and sexual assault felonies.

The convicted rapist, Brock Turner, came under media attention after he assaulted an unconscious woman outside a Standford University fraternity house party in 2015.

In 2016, Turner’s case came to light again after the court sentenced him to six months in jail only despite committing heinous crimes like attempted rape and sexual assault. However, earlier this week, the court issued a ruling that Turner’s appeal to overturn his felonies, as put forward by his lawyers, lacked merit.

In 2016 a jury declared him guilty of three charges:

  1.  Sexually assaulting an intoxicated victim
  2. Sexually assaulting an unconscious victim
  3. Attempting to rape her

The current ruling issued by the appeal court on Wednesday stated that the 22-year-old will remain on the sex-offenders register. This ruling is being positively acknowledged by the masses, as opposed to the previous rulings of the case and the charges put on Turner.

Initially, prosecutors had sought a six-year term for his crimes. Turner was sentenced to six months instead and released after serving three. However, this sparked worldwide outrage and the case judge, Aaron Persky, was widely criticized for issuing a lenient decision. He was later removed from office.

Turner’s case was also widely followed because his charges were deemed to ‘reeked of white supremacy’ and privilege. His father also exhibited aggression and entitlement of his privileges, especially when he quoted that his son’s six-month sentence was a”steep price to pay for 20 minutes of action”.

The victim read him a letter, describing the “severe impact” the assault had on her, during the final hearing. Later, the letter was also shared on social media and it jolted the world whole.
