In honor of the 10 year anniversary of the Green Light video, Chrissy Teigen revealed the jealous breakdown she had when visiting John Legend on set.
In 2008, Legend shot the video for his song Green Light which later went on to win the Grammy for Best Rap/Sung Performance. The video was released on August 22 and singer Estelle made an appearance during it as well. The song depicts a wild party at one stage during the video. Speaking to MTV in 2008, Legend explained, “The song is simple. It’s just me trying to pick up a girl at a club and convince her to come have some fun with me. [The video] definitely has that story line in it, but we just take it kind of different places to do some unexpected visual things. We have this surreal kind of dance sequence, and it features synchronized swimmers and showgirls. We just throw a little extra twist on it.”
In a new Twitter rant, Teigen explained the jealousy-infused breakdown she had when she visited Legend on set. She retweeted a message congratulating Legend on the 10 year anniversary of the video, and wrote, “Fun fact, I had a jealously-fueled meltdown visiting this video set and made an a**hole out of myself to a large group of people.”
Fans immediately started bombarding Teigen with the story, and obliging them she wrote, “Oh you want to know more, do you? Let me try to remember. 10 years is a long time!” She later added, “Ok after a brief refresh with john, I have pieced together small bits of information” before launching into the story.
She said that it all fell apart when she overheard everyone on set talking about how beautiful the women on set were. She wrote, “it began with our friends (john’s managers and co-writers and a couple others) talking about how BEAAAAAAUUUUTIFUL some of the women were…” adding, “…and they were! But in my mind they not only were talking about it, they were talking about it on purpose to rile me up. Looking back and knowing how well I know them now, THEY WERE DEFINITELY RILING ME UP AND GETTING A KICK OUT OF IT.”
She also added that she got angrier and angrier with Legend in her mind as she watched the footage, explaining, “I was watching the monitor with all the guys and someone, I can’t remember who, said, ‘ooooooo look at that girl with john ooooooooo!’ so I watched the monitor like a psychotic (tarantula) hawk and in my mind, oh he was in trouble.”
Bringing back her own personal experiences, she said, “Keep in mind john and I met on a video. I was that girl! I know how this s**t works!” Teigen and Legend met in 2007 when the Sports Illustrated cover girl starred in Legend’s video for Stereo. In 2014, she told Cosmopolitan of her first impression of him, saying, “I walked into John’s dressing room to meet him, and he was ironing in his underwear. I said, ‘You do your own ironing!?’ He said, ‘Of course I do.’ I gave him a hug.” She revealed that after this steamy encounter, they went to her hotel room, ate In-N-Out and hooked up, after which Legend left for tour. The two kept in touch without making things too formal, and ended up getting married in September 2013.
Continuing with her story, she said, “He probably laughed at something she said. And in my mind it was some GRAND conversation I was conjuring up. They were probably just talking about craft services honestly but in my mind she was like ‘hey we should b**e’ and he was like ‘haha f**k yeah!‘” Her anger only escalated from there as she recounted to fans, “A few more shoulder touches and laughs with her later, I lost it. Anger turned to sobbing turned to fleeing the set and getting a hotel room. The director (ALAN FERGUSON!) was baffled. Everyone was.”
Justifying herself to fans, Teigen wrote, “Anyhow I wish more happened but no. I was just a jealous, angry 22 year old. I’m better now. BUT DONT TEST ME.”
At the time of the music video shoot, Legend was not thinking that seriously about Teigen. He told Los Angeles Confidential in 2014 that he was not thinking of a future with Teigen at the start of their courtship, saying, “I’m more cautious than that. I wasn’t like, ‘This is the woman I’m going to marry’ from day one. For me I’m the kind of person who needs to grow into that feeling. It was probably a couple of years in when I could already see us being together forever.”
Teigen and Legend now have two children together.
