Joseph Gordon-Levitt gives blunt opinion on Tom from 500 Days of Summer

Joseph Gordon-Levitt has rekindled an old flame – one about the debate centered around the behavior of his character in the movie 500 Days of Summer.

He has labeled Tom as ‘selfish’ and feels that the fans need to rewatch the movie, and rethink their perception of the love-ridden Tom and his love interest, Summer.

On Monday, the 37-year-old actor took to Twitter to defend the character of Summer, and to shift the blame to the imperfections of his own character in response to an angry tweet by a fan. Clearly, people have not moved on from their failed romance, but Joseph’s insight into Tom’s character may finally make them feel otherwise.

The Twitter user wrote, “Still haven’t forgiven Zooey Deschanel for what she did to Joseph Gordon Lewitt in 500 Days of Summer.

Joseph wrote back, “Watch it again. It’s mostly Tom’s fault. He’s projecting. He’s not listening. He’s selfish. Luckily he grows by the end.”

Nearly a decade after its release, 500 Days of Summer is still one of the most liked romantic comedies and has kept the fans talking about it. Quite expectedly, his tweet garnered a lot of response from his fans, praising him for presenting his character in a deserving light.

The gist of the movie, for those who have not seen it, is quite simple. We have Joseph playing the character of Tom, who is totally smitten over Summer, played by the New Girl star, Zooey Deschanel. The movie ends with Summer moving on from Tom, and getting married to someone else. Tom is seen as a damsel in distress, until he finds the courage to move on from Summer to, well, a girl called Autumn.

Except, it’s not that simple. Fans still have not forgiven Summer, the manic pixie dream girl, who had commitment issues throughout the movie, for ditching Tom for another man. Joseph does not share this feeling with his fans, as he is not one to let the character of Tom Hansen off the hook so easily.

He acknowledges the problematic aspects of Tom’s behavior, and shows the viewers that he has spent a good time thinking about the character he played a decade ago. His character, which resonated with a lot of people, had to be redefined for them, and Joseph did not let the opportunity to do so slide.

Joseph has been vocal about his character’s shortcomings on more than one occasion. In 2012, he told Playboy, “The (500) Days of Summer attitude of ‘He wants you so bad’ seems attractive to some women and men, especially younger ones, but I would encourage anyone who has a crush on my character to watch it again and examine how selfish he is. He develops a mildly delusional obsession over a girl onto whom he projects all these fantasies.”

“He thinks she’ll give his life meaning because he doesn’t care about much else going on in his life,” he continued. “A lot of boys and girls think their lives will have meaning if they find a partner who wants nothing else in life but them. That’s not healthy. That’s falling in love with the idea of a person, not the actual person.”
