In his interview with Zan Lowe of Beats 1, the American rapper Mac Miller finally broke off his silence over his break up with the American singer-songwriter, Ariana Grande.
Miller finally opened up about how he feels about his break-up, and Ariana’s subsequent commitment to Pete Davidson. In response to Zan’s question about how he feels, Mac responded in an amicable way, in sync with the way the couple decided to split:
“I was in love with somebody. We were together for two years. We worked through good times, bad times, stress and everything else. And then it came to an end, and we both moved on. And it’s that simple.”
When asked to comment on the engagement, Mac remained collected and only had nice things to say for his still best friend, “It’s all positive energy. I am happy for her and moving forward with her life just as I’m sure she is with me.”
He extended this positive vibe further to thank the people who have been there for him, in a manner which concealed his actual outlook on the matter, as he does not want to be a cause for concern for his fans and family:
“I have people that care about me and fans love my music and its a beautiful relationship with them – people who have been with me through being a 19 year old wide eyed kid to being a self destructive depressed drug user to making love music to all these different stages. then they see something like that and they worry. so your first reaction is, “let me tell them I’m cool.”
Mac talked about how he does not feel the need to document if he’s feeling okay on social media, and does not give much attention to what goes on in the virtual world.
“Like, I haven’t been on the internet,” he said. “So, you know, people have assumed that I’m … ‘Are you OK? Is everything OK?’” Because I was about to drop the album. And also, like, I don’t know, it just all seemed kind of unimportant, the need to show people I was OK. Like, what is that? Where does that come from? Why? Why do we have this need to use social media and the internet?”
In May, the couple broke off ties with each other over problems which ensued because of their apparently busy schedules, but while Ariana confirmed the news on her Instagram on the 10th of May, 2018, with a post laden with appreciation for her now ex-boyfriend, Mac remained silent over the break-up, and instead wiped his social media clean.
Mac’s silence on the matter was in stark contrast with Ariana’s comments on the relationship, as she shut down the rumors initiated by the fans that she was responsible for Mac’s destructive habits after his run-in with the law a week after the break-up. Ariana was vocal about not feeling obligated to stay in a toxic relationship, while Mac continued to stay hushed, even as the news about Ariana’s spontaneous engagement with the SNL comedian Pete Davidson, soon after the break up, was a dagger to his heart!
As fans were quick to cast blame on Ariana for Mac’s DUI accident, where he ran into a utility pole with his G wagon and fled a week post break-up, Mac, however, did not feel much remorse for the incident, as he felt that his stupid mistake was not unwarranted. While talking to Zan Lowe, he said, “Yeah, I made a stupid mistake and I’m a human being. But it was the best thing that could have happened. Best thing that could have happened. I needed that. I needed to run into that light pole and literally like have the whole thing stop.”
Mac not only broke off silence on the matters of his heart, but also broke off his music hiatus after releasing new solos three years after his last album, The Divine Feminine was released in 2016. In his solo Buttons, Mac is alluding to the flinching reason for his break-up with Grande – their busy schedules, and in Small Worlds to the complexity of his addictions, and Ariana’s tip to get his shit together, while hinting on his desire to start clean in Programs. We hope Mac is able to move onto the other side without running into any more utility poles!
